Tall girls with big hearts
Recently, someone in a mother’s email group pointed me to a site that contributes to a very very worthwhile set of causes, namely preventing the trafficking of young girls. It’s a cause near my heart (as it should be to anyone who has or has been a daughter), and this is the first time I’ve a fashion site with a dedicated area for it (Breast cancer support sites fall into the category of more easily accessible - at some point I will post about places to go to help support brca research).
Anyhow, Nelly’s Jewels is the online store displaying the works of a terrific Northern California jewelry artist. And her pendants are not to be believed - they’re simple, gorgeous, and as I said, they support a terrific cause. You could pick a pendant by face and body type (if you have a round face, set it off with The Ram) and know that you’ll be supporting some much needed work. For me, I’m really eyeing several of these as gifts for some of the fashionable, conscience-driven women I know.
And there’s a bonus for those us us big and/or tall girls: One of the nice things about being a real-sized woman or tall chick is that whenever chunky jewelry is “in” you’re golden. Chunky jewelry looks good people on whom the proportions work. However, I’ve found that when I want to order, say, a charm for a cause, the jewelry is either 1) very delicate or 2) too “ethnic” for me (note: there’s nothing wrong with “ethnic” jewelry - but since I’m a second-gen American, I look ethnic enough that if I wear ethnic jewelry, people start complimenting me on my English and that gets real old real fast).Nelly’s simple, striking style however will suit you no matter what your size and ethnicity and will set off a variety of styles of dress (I could even see the square being worn with a plain colored saree!). I’m just waiting for my next paycheck to invest in a couple for self and friends: a good cause, beautiful jewelry…what more could a tall girl want?
