I’m trying to figure out if this is something about the British, about men, or about the media. Or some combination. Of course, Maggie and I both being serious brunettes (my hair would turn orange if I dyed it, and I’ve seen Maggie in a blond wig and it just doesn’t do much for her) so perhaps it’s just bias.
One other possibility of course is it’s not a causal relationship (in other words, it’s not that being blond leads to having girlfriendly traits) but that they both correlate with an underlying attitude. Most blonds are dyed blonds (not all, mind you, but even in Scandanavian countries where blonds are so prevalent, it’s only about 15% of the population naturally). Maybe you’re more likely to have certain priorities if you dye your hair blond since it’s a hard color to maintain. And maybe those priorities might be more conducive to being “fun” “sexy” or “wild” than to being “organized” “sensible” or other things that could be used to describe Tupperware or Oxford shoes.
The belief about blonds would certainly explain why media stars (women) are encouraged to go blonder as they gain a following- to keep that following happy and excited - even when it looks idiotic, like on Jessica Alba and Keira Knightley. Fortunately, Halle Berry hasn’t done it, nor has Angelina Jolie…but of course, if that’s how you have to look to keep from looking “wifely” I’d better go grab some bleach…
Thanks to my friend Charlie for the heads’-up on this article
